– Championship season reached its grand finale as the Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGA JR) hosted its fourth and final Major on October 18–19 at Plum Creek Golf Club. The exclusive field of 59 juniors—39 boys and 20 girls—earned their invitations through standout performances across the Cup Series season, setting up a weekend filled with elite competition and pride on the line.

True to Cup Tour tradition, the weekend kicked off with a Friday night dinner at The Golf Club at Bear Dance, bringing players, families, and staff together for a memorable start to the championship. When players arrived Saturday morning, they were greeted with Mizuno hoodies and beanies, plus custom StrackaLine yardage books—a perfect blend of style, preparation, and excitement for the rounds ahead.

Saturday’s round brought breezy conditions that escalated into strong afternoon winds, making the course even more challenging and unpredictable. As the wind finally calmed on the back nine, players were met with another obstacle—limited daylight. Unfortunately, two groups were unable to finish and had to return Sunday morning to complete their first round. By the end of the day, Ash Edwards and Austin Hunt were tied atop the boys' leaderboard at 1-under-par (71), with Landon Houska and Cooper Kelly close behind at 1-over (73). In the girls’ division, Zoe Bar-Or posted a 1-over 73 to lead, followed by Addison Dorsey with a 76.

Sunday brought blue skies and lighter winds—ideal conditions for the final round. With an 11:30 a.m. start, all players were mindful of pace to ensure both divisions could complete 36 holes. The leaderboard began to shift as players made the turn, creating an exciting final stretch. On the boys’ side, Brayden Destefano caught fire with a 6-under-par front nine, including a birdie-eagle-birdie run on holes 7–9, vaulting him into a tie for the lead at 3-under alongside Edwards and Hunt, who each posted 2-under-par in their final rounds. Meanwhile, Dorsey climbed to the top of the girls’ leaderboard with an even-par 36 on the front nine and continued her strong play through the finish.

Despite several under-par performances, Austin Hunt held steady to claim his first Colorado PGA Junior Major title, finishing with rounds of 71–71 for a 142 total. On the girls' side, Addison Dorsey closed with a final-round 72, finishing two shots clear of the field with a 148 total to secure her first Major win as well.

“I felt pretty good. I’ve been close a couple of times in some of these Majors and hadn’t gotten it done,” said Hunt. “I had some good momentum from the back nine yesterday, so I just tried to continue that into today.” Dorsey shared her approach to staying focused: “It was really easy, too. It wasn’t as hot, so eating was easier, breathing was easier, and just playing with the girls was very fun—that made it fun to play.”

            – Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its third Major Championship of the season Monday through Wednesday, July 21–23, at Lake Valley Golf Club in Niwot, Colorado. Thirty-two of the Colorado Section’s top boys and 27 top girls arrived at the course ready to compete head-to-head in hopes of being the last player standing in our match play bracket at the Mizuno Colorado PGA Junior Match Play Championship. Upon arrival, players were greeted with a selection of Mizuno hats, a co-branded Mizuno/Colorado PGA Junior Golf fairway wood headcover, and a StrackaLine yardage book. The atmosphere of a major championship set the stage for an exciting week—but it was the juniors who brought the drama as play began.

The excitement continued into Tuesday as more top seeds were eliminated in dramatic fashion. In the Girls Round of 16, 2025 CO Junior PGA Runner-Up Addison Dorsey defeated 17-seed Aspen Murphy 2&1. Meanwhile, the 3-, 4-, and 5-seeds were all knocked out in their opening matches. On the Boys side, 15-seed Jackson Stewart came out hot with a dominant 7&6 victory over 2-seed Campbell McFadden. Past champion Miles Kuhl edged out fellow Team Colorado member Landon Houska 2&1 in a closely contested match.

Tuesday also marked the first of two long days of back-to-back matches for our juniors, who battled through 90-degree heat, gusty afternoon winds, and intense competition. Thanks to on-course hydration provided by Gatorade, Round of 16 winners carried on into the afternoon for their Quarterfinal matches. Two matches advanced beyond regulation into sudden-death playoffs. Jack Brayman and Alexander (Alex) Kukreja remained neck-and-neck before Alex ultimately secured the win with a birdie on the 19th hole, knocking off the 1-seed. On the Girls side, Isla Carlucci outlasted Brynn Balliet in the longest match of the week, winning on the 20th hole.

Wednesday had a special energy as the eight semifinalists arrived, each hoping to earn a spot in the finals. The Boys semifinals began with Michael Rosman and Jackson Stewart trading holes throughout the match. Michael took a 1-up lead on hole 11, but Jackson stayed in the fight, squaring the match on 13 and ultimately sinking a birdie on 18 to win 1-up. In the other semifinal, Jonathan Smith and Alexander Kukreja battled in another tight match. Alex took a 1-up lead on 10, but Jonathan responded on 13 to tie it back up. Kukreja then took control with wins on holes 16 and 17, earning his place in the final against Stewart.

In the Girls semifinal matches, Tatum Platt took an early lead over Peyton Landon by going 1-up on hole 2. Peyton responded by winning holes 4, 5, and 6, but Tatum answered with steady play and pulled away to win the match 4&3. Meanwhile, Hadley Ashton jumped out to a quick 2-up lead through the first two holes against Isla Carlucci. Isla battled back and made the turn with a 1-up lead, but Hadley regained momentum on the back nine and ultimately closed out the match on 18 to advance to the final.

The Boys and Girls Championship matches delivered an exciting finish to the week. In the Boys match, Kukreja teed off first with Stewart closely watching, and the battle remained tight throughout the front nine. Alexander made the turn with a 2-up lead. Jackson refused to back down, narrowing the gap to just 1-down through 13 and holding steady through 15. On the Girls side, Hadley maintained control, making the turn 3-up. Tatum applied pressure late, making birdie and par on holes 15 and 16 to get to just 1-down, but Hadley drained a clutch par putt on 17 to win the match 2&1 and claim the Girls Championship title. In the Boys Championship, Alexander secured his 2&1 victory with a perfectly executed birdie on the par-3 16th, earning his first COPGA Junior Major title.

When asked how she stayed composed on the course, Hadley shared, “I really just tried to stay in the present. I told myself one shot at a time out there, because 36 is a long day. You don’t know what could happen.” Reflecting on her week, she added, “I learned that I could persevere really well.” Ashton will head to play collegiate golf at the University of Wisconsin this fall.

Throughout the week, players battled scorching temperatures, tight fairways, and greens guarded by strategically placed bunkers—conditions that demanded precision off the tee and smart course management, making for a true test of skill. After round one, CheyAnne Schrick rose to the challenge, finishing atop the girls’ leaderboard with an impressive 1-under-par 71. On the boys’ side, Dalton Sisneros, Brayden Destefano, and Wyatt Isgrig shared the lead, each carding a strong 2-under-par 70.

Her strong play moved her into a tie for second with Addison Dorsey at 7-over-par 151, just three strokes behind Schrick, who maintained her lead heading into the final round.

The final day delivered plenty of drama and excitement as the field was cut to the top 31 boys and 13 girls for the final round. The final day delivered plenty of drama and excitement. In the Girls Championship, the leaderboard remained tight through the turn, with Dorsey leading after an even-par 36 on the front nine. Schrick and Lee stayed close, setting up a thrilling finish. Lee found her rhythm on the back nine, closing with a steady 2-over-par round to secure the title with a three-day total of 9-over-par 225—clinching a hard-fought victory.

On the boys’ side, Edwards and Kuhl entered the back nine separated by just one stroke. Edwards, 2-under at the turn, went on a historic tear—birdieing holes 10 through 13, holing out for eagle on 14, and adding birdies on 15 and 16. His electric finish earned him an incredible 8-under-par 64 and the Boys Championship title with a final score of 12-under-par 204. This incredible round ties the score recorded by Wyndham Clark during the 2011 4A State Championships, cementing Edwards’ performance as one of the most memorable in recent Colorado junior golf history.

Lee earned her second Major Championship title of the 2025 season and her fourth career Major. “Midway through round two, I felt like I was hitting the ball better. I was sticking to my game plan, my fundamentals were there, and my mental game was in a whole different place, which really helped,” Lee reflected.

            – The Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its first Major Championship of the summer last week at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. Both boys and girls showcased their talent and determination, battling for three consecutive days in a tournament that truly tested their playing ability.

The field began with 87 juniors—59 boys and 28 girls—teeing it up on Monday. The weather played a notable role throughout the week. Monday featured blistering heat and perfect playing conditions to kick off the championship. Tuesday brought a different challenge, as significant rainfall softened the course just before players teed off. Despite two weather delays due to lightning, the players displayed impressive mental toughness.

The weather presented an intriguing challenge over the weekend. Saturday started with light sprinkles as players teed off on the North and West courses. As the round progressed, a thick fog rolled in, obscuring landing areas and adding an element of unpredictability to the game. With visibility diminishing, play was suspended to allow time for the fog to clear. After an hour-and-a-half delay, players returned to find blue skies and sunshine. By the end of the first round, Jesse Hand emerged as the leader with the only score under par for the day, finishing at 69. Ash Edwards followed closely in second place at even par (72), while Henry Starr held third with a score of 1-over par (73). Sunday’s final round came quickly, bringing another day of blue skies and some wind later in the day. For the final round, players would play a different nine-hole course, the West and South courses, for the day. This change in course setup added a new dimension to the game and kept the competition exciting. As the day went along, spectators saw movement on the leaderboard, leaving us with an exciting final day to this Major Championship.

Despite several players finishing with under-par rounds, Jesse Hand secured his wire-to-wire victory and was crowned the Mizuno Colorado PGA Junior Invitational Boys Champion. Hand completed the event with scores of 69 and 74, totaling 143. On the girls' side, Sophia Lee maintained her lead, finishing with a five-shot victory, recording scores of 74 and 76 for a combined total of 150 to claim the Girls' Championship.

For Hand, this was his first Colorado PGA Jr Major victory; for Lee, this was her second as she won the Aurora Junior Championship in 2023. Lee felt that being aggressive this weekend was the key to her success. “It might not always work out, but at least you’re giving yourself a chance,” stated Lee. As for Hand, putting was his key to success. “I did not have my A-game either day, really. I made a lot of good putts on day one and today a lot of really good par saves,” said Hand.

I’ve been so close all year. Like top 5 or top 10 every single tournament that I’ve played. It was really good to finally break through and win one,” said Hand.

           - Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its third Major of the season Monday through Wednesday, July 22-24, at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont, Colorado. When arriving at the course, players were presented with the choice of shoes courtesy of Mizuno, choosing their favorite style. Additionally, they received a StrackaLine yardage book, a sleeve of Mizuno golf balls, a Gatorade towel, and a Gatorade water bottle. After being hit by a big thunderstorm just days before our event, the maintenance team at The Fox Hill Club worked tirelessly to get the course in shape for our championship.

The field started with 32 boys and 30 girls, who competed in a match play format. For the girls, being the top two in point standings, Maddie Makino and Ashleigh Wilson received a bye. Many girls came to play, with Audrey Whitmore winning 8 & 7, Addison Hines winning 7 & 6, Lenna Persson winning 9 & 7, and Hope Torres winning 9 & 8. Miles Kuhl and Ash Edwards came out strong for the boys, winning their matches 7 & 6. Chris O’Donnell took his match 19 holes, and Michael Rosman took his match to four extra holes to eventually win his match.

The second day was demanding with players playing 36 holes upon winning their morning matches. Tee times began at 8:00 am for the morning matches and 1:30 pm for the second round, with there always being a possibility to play more than the allotted 36 holes, which happened in Christopher O’Donnell’s match. Christopher took his match against Vincent Vanliere an impressive seven extra holes in their first match, eventually winning and turning right around moments later to tee off for his second match of the day, which went to hole 16. While he did not win his second match (Ash Edwards won 4 & 2), he played an impressive 41 holes in a day. For the girls' first matches, Aja Blankenship and Addison Hines won at an admirable 6 & 5. Going into the quarterfinals, Austin Hunt won 5 & 4 for the boys, and Hope Torres won 7 & 6 for the girls.

Going into the final day, for the boys' semi-finals, it was Austin Hunt vs Gavin Amella and Miles Kuhl vs Ash Edwards. Then, for the girls, Shelby McCord vs Hope Torres and Ashleigh Wilson vs Audrey Whitmore. Both Austin and Ash battled to the end, with Austin winning 2 & 1 and Ash winning one up. Hope won 3 & 1, and Ashleigh won 3 & 2. The final matches were set – Austin Hunt vs Ash Edwards and Hope Torres vs Ashleigh Wilson. It was a close match for both; Austin and Ashleigh hung in there, but once they turned to the final 9 holes, Ash and Hope pulled ahead. Hope ended her match first, winning on the 14th hole at 5 & 4. Ash battled it out until the 16th hole, winning his match 4 & 2. After a grueling couple of days, Hope said her key to success was to “stay disciplined and just focus and kind of get those outside distractions out of the way, and just zone in.” Ash said, “It was definitely tough; it was super hot, and I was able to put my head down and make a few putts.”

When asked about the significance of what winning this tournament meant to them, Ash said, “It's huge,” as he continued to say that he “played last year and lost in the first round…; it’s really great to come back and win this year.” Hope said, “It means a lot… I think it’s super cool, you know, I’ve never gotten this far in these types of tournaments, and I think it’s a big accomplishment, especially, you know, about to be a senior, so trying to get those last tournaments in.”

For round 2, Andre Dumonteil and Conner Scheich had the low of the day for the boys with a 68 (-3), which put Conner Scheich tied for first with Talan Gover at a two day total of -7. Ashleigh Wilson showcased her consistency for the girls, shooting an even par, 72, for a two-day total of 144, offsetting Logan Hale by 3 shots.

Landon Houska came to play for the final day, shooting his career low with a 64 (-7) with a three-day total of 201 (-12). Talan Gover and Miles Kuhl rounded out the top three with a 203 (-10) and 204 (-9) respectively. When asked what his favorite moment from the tournament was, Landon said that it would be when he “made a 70-footer on 13,” saying that it “really just shifted the momentum and got everything going in the right direction.” He later said that his key to success was both ball striking and having the putts drop on the final day. As he said, “My ball striking was good all week, and just had to get some putts to drop. And they finally did. So I was just confident going into today and knew that it was out there.”

Logan Hale hung in there, going 70-77-70 for a final three-day score of 217 (+1), upsetting the reigning champion Ashleigh Wilson who was in first place coming into day three by 3 strokes. Logan said her key to success was “staying in the moment…, having fun with it,” and not trying to “take things too serious.” Her key to success played a big role in how she mentally prepared coming into the final round, saying, “I tried to accept all outcomes and put myself in a place that I was ok with whatever the course brought at me, whatever my competitors brought at me, and just kind of tried to stay in the moment and have fun with the group I was playing with.”

Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its first Major Championship of the summer earlier this week at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. Both boys and girls showcased their unwavering resilience, battling it out for three straight days in tough conditions that tested their playing ability. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the players demonstrated their mental toughness, adding an extra layer of challenge to our Major Championship.

The tournaments started with a full field of 90 juniors, with 60 boys and 30 girls teeing it up on Monday. After play on day two, a cut was made that advanced 30 boys and 16 girls to the final round. Our boy's Champion was Johnathon Smith, shooting 75-75-76, totaling 226 for the three days. “The course played tougher,” stated Smith when discussing the course conditions. “I hit the ball really good, especially off the tee, just couldn’t really score and I just had to be patient and know that I was still in the tournament no matter what.” Smith attributes his mental game to what helped him this week. Smith stated that the key to his success was “staying in the moment, stay present, just not let anything hold me back. If I make a mistake, move on, be patient, and just stay in the tournament and know that I could still win.”

I have played this course tons and tons of times and never played it like it was this week.” Fitzgerald not only chipped in for a birdie on her final hole but also chipped in to win the playoff against Macy Kleve, who also finished the tournament with a three-day total of 234.

Larkspur, CO (Jan. 17, 2024) - Colorado is launching a state junior golf team that will expand the pipeline for elite local golfers into the recently created U.S. National Development Program (USNDP), a new initiative launched last February by the United States Golf Association. Colorado is one of seven states that will participate in the initial phase of the state team pilot program kicking off in 2024 with the goal of all states having a team by 2033.

"We are very excited to be providing this state team program for Colorado's top junior golfers in alignment with the USGA. The more opportunities the state's elite juniors have to excel, the more successful they will be as they advance through their playing careers" says Ashley Harrell, Colorado Golf Association (CGA) Chief Operating Officer.

The other six participants include California, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Ohio and Tennessee. The program will come to fruition through close collaboration between the USGA, its allied golf associations, the PGA of America and its sections and relevant state junior programs.

"This first of its kind state team program will serve as a critical part of the talent identification pathway for the USNDP and provide more opportunities for a diverse population of athletes to receive resources and guidance to compete at the highest levels of the game," says Heather Daly-Donafrio, USGA managing director, Player Relations and Development. "Additionally, the opportunity to represent their home state will incentivize each region's best junior golfers to play more in-state competitions, ultimately strengthening the junior golf programming across the country."

The seven states participating in this initial pilot program will each establish a committee consisting of representatives from major golf entities within the state including any AGAs and PGA of America Sections. Colorado's team committee includes Ed Mate (CGA), Ashley Harrell (CGA), Cayla Regnery (CGA), Mark Crabtree (At-Large), and Peter Weisel, PGA (Colorado PGA).

The committee will oversee team selection criteria and the operation of the Colorado state team program based on guidelines provided by the USGA. Team selection criteria will be published prior to the entry deadline of the first event and may consist of a points structure, ranking or combination of other competitive factors.

State team roster sizes are calculated by elite junior participation in the state, ranging from a maximum of two boys/two girls to 20 boys/20 girls. Colorado expects to have 16 players (eight boys/eight girls) as part of the initial team. To be eligible to compete on a state team in 2024, a player must be a U.S. Citizen. Each eligible player must be 13 years old by Jan. 1, 2025, have not reached their 19th birthday by July 19, 2025, and must not be enrolled in college for the 2024-2025 school year. A Handicap Index® is also required.

Announced in February of 2023, the USNDP is designed to ensure that American golf is the global leader in the game by focusing on six key pillars: talent identification, access to competition, national teams, athlete resources, player development and relations and athlete financial support. The state team program will focus on creating a developmentally appropriated, aspirational pathway for athletes within each state to compete at higher levels of the game, including an opportunity to represent the United States as a member of the USNDP's National Team led by former Pepperdine Associate Head Coach Chris Zambri.

Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its final Major Championship of the season Saturday and Sunday, October 7-8, at Denver Country Club in Denver, Colorado. 39 of the Colorado Section's top boys and 20 of its top girls arrived this weekend in hopes to be crowned the Mizuno Colorado Junior Invitational Champion. While players were entering the beautiful grounds of Denver Country Club they were also greeted with tee gifts from Josh Knipp of Mizuno including a sweatshirt, umbrella, and a sleeve of golf balls.

Saturday started out as a pretty chilly morning. As the players were arriving you could feel the nerves and the excitement in the air. Tee times began at 9:00 AM, most players were seeing the course for the first time and truly did not know what to expect. The course was in amazing condition for the players which made play a little difficult for everyone in the field. But there was no funny business happening on the golf course. At the end of the day Saturday Clint Summers III was currently in the lead shooting a 71. Sam Walker and Billy Ver Straate tied with both of them shooting 72. For the girls our leaders were Madeline Bante and Ashleigh Wilson tied after both of them shooting a 75. Sophia Lee leading behind them shooting a 78. Going into Sunday for their final round the trophy was still up for grabs from anyone.

Sunday morning came quick and in no time Denver Country Club was filled with players coming in full blast ready to complete their final day of the tournament. The facility slowly became filled with supportive spectators and DCC Members coming out and cheering on the players final day. Sunday was a warmer day for our players quickly drying up the course from the morning dew that came making greens faster and faster as the day went on. The leaderboard for both our boys and girls was hot, as it was filled with plenty of movement, leaving anyone in the running. After battling it out on 18, Brenna Higgins was crowned as our girls Jr. Invitational champion shooting a 78-76 totaling 154 for both days. As play wrapped up for the boys, it looked like a playoff hole would come into play. Sure enough, Sam Walker and Tyler Long found themselves in a tie for 1st place once all participants had turned in their scores. Walker and Long found themselves back on number 18, heading into an official playoff. All eyes were on these players, patiently waiting to see which boy would be crowned. Tyler Long walked away with a bogey while Sam Walker walked away with a par after shooting 72-71 totaling 143 for both days making him the boys Jr. Invitational Champion.

For both Higgins and Walker, our champions, this was their first Colorado PGA Jr. Major victory. "I was in the second group of leaders and since my first round wasn't great I thought I was so out of it." Higgins stated. Brenna had said the hardest part of the course was "placing yourself on the right spot of the greens. They were super big and had a lot of slope which made the past two days very tricky." Sam had said, "I typically go into my rounds thinking they made birdie on this hole so I need to birdie the next hole. So I went into today focusing on my own game and not worrying about my competitors." Very similar to Brenna, Sam had said, "the hardest part about this course were the greens. The greens were super fast and firm all weekend."

Mizuno golf is all about the youth alliance strategy and finding ways to help the growth of junior golf." Steve David, PGA, Head Professional of Denver Country Club said, "We are extremely proud of junior golf inside and outside of the club. Our mission is to embrace the game both young and old and its a pleasure of ours to host the premier juniors here in Colorado."

Colorado continues to play a big role in Drive, Chip and Putt history as three more Coloradans were crowned National Finalists. Two of their stories intersected with that of an industry professional on hand at regional qualifying.

That’s the word George Solich, Castle Pines Golf Club board chairman and president, used in describing how Sunday’s Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier played out at the scenic course south of Denver. You see, Solich was presenting the awards for the event, and the first one went to Simon White, winner of the Boys 14-15 age group, who not only grew up in Colorado Springs, Colo. — where Solich did — but is attending the same high school, Cheyenne Mountain, from which Solich graduated in 1979. To add to the connection, the second National Finalist crowned Sunday, Girls 14-15 age group winner Landry Frost, also calls Colorado Springs home. Both Solich and his brother Duffy, the tournament chairman for the PGA Tour’s 2024 BMW Championship that will be played next August at Castle Pines, caddied at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and earned Evans Scholarships to the University of Colorado. “The first kid I get to send to Augusta (on Sunday), he went to the high school I went to — Cheyenne Mountain,” George Solich said. “And the next one was another Colorado Springs kid. That was pretty neat, pretty special.”

In the second Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier hosted by Castle Pines — which also hosted the PGA Tour’s International from 1986 through 2006 — three Coloradans punched their tickets to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club set for April 7, 2024, by winning their respective age and gender divisions. That trio consisted of White and Frost as well as Girls 7-9 age group winner Sydney Liddell of Parker, Colo. Liddell, 9, doesn’t play tournament golf and advanced to the National Finals in her first time competing in Drive, Chip and Putt. “This is the first time I’ve tried to qualify. It kind of surprises me a little that I made it my first time,” said Liddell, who drained a 30-foot putt to cap off her day.

Frost missed qualifying for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals last year at Castle Pines by only four points, making Sunday’s accomplishment all the sweeter. “It feels really good,” the 13-year-old said. “I’m super excited. I’ve been wanting to go for a long time.” Last year’s close call created extra motivation for Frost heading into this year’s regional. “When I saw that other people were getting interviewed and stuff, I was like, ‘I really want to be there,’” she said. “I worked extra hard this year.” While White, Frost and Liddell become the 14th, 15th and 16th Drive, Chip and Putt National Finalists from Colorado all-time, the Centennial State wasn’t alone in advancing three qualifiers from Castle Pines to the 2024 National Finals.

Nebraska, Colorado’s neighbor to the northeast, also is sending a trio from Castle Pines: Patrick Vilai of Grand Island from the Boys 12-13 age group, Anna Midyett of Bennington from the Girls 10-11 age group and Henry Amen of Imperial, who had his prayers answered in the Boys 7-9 division. Midyett advanced to the National Finals from Castle Pines for the second straight year. This past spring in her Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals debut at Augusta National, Midyett tied for third place in the Girls 7-9 age group. Asked if Castle Pines is good luck for her, Midyett said, “Yes, I think it is because I got a little ball marker from Castle Pines last year and it’s kind of become my good-luck charm.” In fact, she uses it during all her golf rounds. Vilai advanced to the National Finals despite the head and shaft of his driver breaking just before the competition started on Sunday.

I hit it 228 yards.”The only two National Finalists not from Colorado or Nebraska were Harlow Gregory of Norman, Okla., who put up the day’s highest overall point total (160) to win the Girls 12-13 age division and Brock Jernigan of Lebanon, Mo., who won the Boys 10-11 division.

Colorado has now hosted a Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier three consecutive years, with Colorado Golf Club doing the honors in 2021 (as well as in 2019) and Castle Pines taking over in 2022 and '23. “I think it’s a thrill for a lot of these kids and their families to come to Castle Pines. We do it right for them,” said George Solich, who plans to attend the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals in April. “We have a little barbecue for the contestants and their families here the night before. They got to go in the pro shop and get a few items with Castle Pines on it. It’s just a beautiful setting for this. “Anybody that’s in golf loves the opportunity to get young people involved — and we’re no different. Our membership is just thrilled. They love coming out and seeing the kids; it’s inspiring to see. We think (Drive, Chip and Putt is) a fabulous organization to get young people involved from all over the country.”

Jernigan had one of the longer trips to get to Castle Pines, time-wise. He said it took about 11-12 hours for the Jernigans to drive from their home in Missouri to Castle Pines, which turns out to be more than 750 miles one way.

Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its third Major Championship of the season Tuesday through Thursday, July 25-27, at Lake Valley Golf Club in Niwot, Colorado. 32 of the Colorado Section's top boys and 30 of its top girls arrived Tuesday to battle head-to-head in hopes of being the last player standing atop our match play bracket at the Mizuno Colorado PGA Jr. Match Play Championship. Players walking onto the property were greeted with tee gifts from Mizuno and Josh Knipp including both a duffle bag perfectly suited for traveling the junior circuit and a COPGA Jr. Golf bucket hat. The pageantry of a major championship set the stage for a fantastic week, but it was the juniors who would provide the spectacle as the tournament began.

Tuesday brought a windy morning that supplied fireworks to some of the Championship's opening matches. In the Boys Championship, the day started off with a bang as 32-seed Alex Lest took down top-ranked Billy Ver Straate in a match that stretched to the 18th hole. Two of the Boys matches in the Round of 32 went beyond regulation play and into sudden-death playoffs. Tuesday also brought us our longest match of the week when Andrew White took 23 holes to defeat Clint Summers III. In the Girls Round of 32, Noelle Thompson took the highlight with the largest win of the day notching an 8 & 6 victory over Addison Blackwood. After their rounds, players were able to enjoy a complimentary lunch provided by the UCCS Professional Golf Management program. Upstairs the clubhouse was buzzing with players talking about their matches over their meals after a busy first day.

Thompson was unable to hold her distinction for largest victory for long, as Wednesday’s Girl’s Round of 16 opened with 2023 Girls CO Jr. PGA Champion Ashleigh Wilson marking a 9 & 8 victory over Lizzy Malcolm in her first match of the week after receiving a first-round bye. In the Boys Round of 16 Caleb Michaels and Luke Blankinship, both from Louisville, CO took victories in their matches pitting them against each other in the Quarterfinals. Wednesday was the first of two long days of back-to-back matches for our juniors, competing against each other through 90-degree temperatures and the scorching summer sun. Aided by BioSteel’s healthy hydration, winners of the Round of 16 carried on into the afternoon for their Quarterfinals Matches. Caleb Michaels would end up taking the Battle for Louisville with a 4 & 2 victory, while Tyler Long took his match with Gavin Amella to the 18th where he would cement his Semifinals pairing with Michaels. On the other side of the bracket, 2023 Boys CO Jr. PGA Champion Miles Kuhl finished his match early for the only time in the Championship, beating Rylen Caldwell 3 & 2. Squaring off against Kuhl in Boys Semifinal match #2 would be Landon Houska after winning his second playoff of the week, taking Brayden Forte to the 20th hole. The Girls Quarterfinals produced the same excitement, with first and second-ranked players Sophia Lee and Ashleigh Wilson playing their way into Thursday’s matches as the favorites to meet in the Championship. Macy Kleve would continue her dominant performance throughout the event, winning her Quarterfinal to take on Lee in the morning. Addison Hines was able to cement her place across from Ashleigh Wilson in her toughest match of the week thus far, winning 2 & 1 against Kya Shatzer.

Championship Thursday had a special feeling in the air as the eight semifinalists arrived onsite to prepare for their matches. Without a cloud in the sky or a puff of breeze, the Semifinals matches were underway. With the Girls matches out first, it was Addison Hines who jumped out to a quick start, gaining a 2-up lead through the first 5 holes. Hines was quickly matched by a determined Ashleigh Wilson who fought to get the match to extra holes where she would win on hole 20. Meanwhile, Macy Kleve and Sophia Lee held a tight back-and-forth battle that was tied through the front nine, but ultimately Macy Kleve took control, winning the match on 18 after Lee applied pressure on 16 and 17. Match #3 of Michaels v. Long was similarly close as the players made the turn but would be the earliest match to finish as Michaels won 2 & 1 to place himself in the Championship Match. Miles Kuhl looked as though he was about to run away with his 3-up lead through nine holes but things began to change as Landon Houska wouldn’t relent under Kuhl’s pressure. Houska would manage to keep himself alive until the 18th where Kuhl would win the match 1 up solidifying himself against Caleb Michaels in the Boys Championship match.

The Boys and Girls Championship Matches provided quite a spectacle as the afternoon began. At the request of both matches, both were played simultaneously within the same group. This offered a unique opportunity to showcase the depth of competition within both of our fields, as well as the camaraderie of the juniors playing on the COPGA Jr Tour. Teeing off first was Caleb Michaels watched intently by Miles Kuhl as the pressure of the penultimate match mounted. Macy Kleve would tee off first of the Girls, hoping to take advantage of the hour of rest she’d had while Ashleigh Wilson fought through a playoff in the Semifinals. It would be Ashleigh Wilson taking swift control though, grasping and maintaining her lead as the match progressed, failing to relent and ground to Kleve. The Boys match remained a close battle after Kuhl jumped out to an early start, but with Michaels refusing to quit, the match hovered near tied as it reached its later holes. After Macy Kleve made two consecutive match-saving putts on 15 and 16, she was unable to hold off the charge by the exhausted Wilson who would tap in on 17 for a 2 & 1 victory. It took Michaels and Kuhl longer to decide the Boys Championship, however, as Michaels drained a birdie on 17 from just inside ten feet to tie the match headed to the 18th hole. After Kuhl narrowly missed match-closing birdies on both the 18th and 19th holes, he would close out his second consecutive major with a wedge to tap in range for a birdie on the 20th.

The duo are also surely excited about the prospect of their victory attracting attention from college coaches on Junior Golf Hub.

Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its second Major event of the summer Monday through Wednesday, July 10-12, at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster, Colorado. Some of Colorado's most elite boys and girls competed for three days, battling it out for honors and the chance to qualify for the National Junior PGA Championships. Monday provided beautiful blue skies and great course conditions for the juniors. On day two weather warmed up further, reaching 95 degrees which created challenging speed on the greens. Difficulty and warm weather continued into the final day giving way to light rain which rolled in during the afternoon, providing a cool-off for the golfers. The course staff did an amazing job at maintaining stellar course conditions, thanks to the hard work of golf course superintendent Paul Sibley and his entire staff.

The field started with 87 juniors in total, with 63 boys and 24 girls teeing it up on Monday. After play on day two, a cut was made that advanced 32 boys and 14 girls to the final round. Two female competitors tied for the 13th and final slot, both advanced. The boys' champion was Miles Kuhl shooting 67-76-71, totaling 214 at +1 for the three days. "The most consistent part of my game was my putting. Being successful on the green and winning this major was a big boost of confidence. I got it done.” Miles proceeded to discuss how eliminating three putts was vital and that his accuracy with his long irons put him in a better position for putts.

"I was confident and consistent.” Ashleigh went on to explain the difficulty of the narrow fairways and how consistency off the tee was critical to her success. Wilson was able to add another major win to her career. “You work so hard, and it finally pays off. It’s important not to question yourself.”

The Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its first Major event of the summer Tuesday through Thursday at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. Both boys and girls competed these three days to battle it out for first place. Tuesday provided beautiful blue skies and great course conditions for the juniors. Day two weather was certainly a concern, as the forecast suggested storms rolling in, but thankfully the storms held off and the juniors were able to finish their rounds with no weather delays! Unfortunately, those storms did end up providing a substantial amount of rain for the Aurora area over night, and the final day of the tournament had to be cut down to an 8 hole event for our players. Unfortunately fairways, bunkers and even bridges in between holes were completely flooded, which lead to the decision of only playing 8 on the final day. The course staff did an amazing job at keeping the course in the best condition it could possibly be thanks to the hard work of golf course superintendent Eric Strasheim, Patrick Kilbride, PGA, and their entire golf staff.

The field started with 82 juniors in total, with 63 boys and 19 girls teeing it up on Tuesday. After play on day two, a cut was made that advanced 31 boys and 10 girls to the final round. Our boys champion for our first major was Sawyer Klein shooting 70-72-33 totaling 175 for the three days. "Murphy Creek is a tough golf course if you do not keep it in the fairways" stated the champion, and luckily he did just exactly that. Going into the third day every player had the expectations of playing 18 holes, but finding out right before the round that it was now going to be shortened to a 8 hole tournament can really change your game plan for the day. "My goal was to make as many pars as possible whether it is a 8 hole tournament or 18" Sawyer commented. He proceeded to discuss how the first round was very "scorable" but the next two days were "a bit tougher with the wind and course conditions."

Our girls champion was Sophia Lee shooting 76-78-38 totaling 192. Sophia's driver was on point for her all three days of play. "I was relieved!" Lee shared when learning that Wednesday's round would only be 8 holes. "I struggled with the back 9 on Tuesday and Wednesday, so to know we only were playing 8; it took a big weight off my shoulders."

New for the 2023 season, the Colorado PGA has developed a new "Player Development Model" for all levels of juniors golfers in Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. The COPGA wants to ensure that juniors are being given the correct avenue to succeed through non-competitive playing opportunites as well as various levels of tournament play. Below, you will find our new 2023 Player Pathway diagram, goals, mission and more information on our new "Player Development Model."

PGA REACH Colorado offers youth opportunities to learn, play, and compete throughout their skill development. Although our programs foster competition, the primary goals are to grow the game, provide a welcoming and inclusive environment, and encourage friendship, sportsmanship, honesty and integrity. We aim to utilize golf as a vehicle to instill values such as integrity, honor, and patience.

To create a pathway for parents and juniors to understand that includes development levels up to top competition.

The most common question we receive from families is how to navigate the youth golf scene in Colorado. As the Colorado PGA Section, it is our duty to provide juniors a clear pathway to grow in the game of golf while guiding their parents, families and coaches in determining the level at which the junior will thrive.
