Cary Breaks Through, Fitzgerald Charges Back at the Mizuno Aurora Junior Championship

Aurora, CO – The Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its first Major Championship of the summer early this week at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. Both boys and girls showcased their talent and determination, battling for three straight days in a championship where birdies were plentiful and the leaderboard remained crowded with red numbers throughout the week.
The field began with 90 juniors—60 boys and 30 girls—teeing it up on Monday. The weather and course conditions provided an excellent test throughout the championship. Players were greeted by sunny skies, warm temperatures, and only a light breeze over the three days, creating ideal scoring conditions. The dry, firm playing surfaces rewarded solid ball-striking and strategic course management, allowing many competitors to take advantage of scoring opportunities while still demanding precision around Murphy Creek.
After 36 holes, the Boys Division featured a tightly contested race at the top of the leaderboard, with Sean Cary and Michael Rosman sharing the lead at 9-under-par 135. Close behind were Drew Jepson and Connor Young, who sat just one stroke back at 8-under-par 136, setting the stage for an exciting final round.
The Girls Division was equally competitive, as Addison Dorsey surged into the lead with a spectacular second-round 65 (-7). Her two-day total of 6-under-par 138 gave her a two-shot advantage over Scout Fitzgerald heading into Wednesday's final round.
Wednesday’s final round featured warm temperatures and breezy conditions for the 32 boys and 15 girls who advanced past the cut. In the Boys Division, the championship came down to the final holes as several players made a charge at the leaders. Among them was Crew Fitzgerald, who posted a stellar final-round 67 (-5) to climb the leaderboard.
Despite the pressure, Sean Cary remained steady throughout the day and secured the title by making par on his final hole. Cary captured his first Colorado PGA Junior Major Championship with a three-round total of 11-under-par 205, narrowly holding off runner-up Ryan Dooms, who finished just one shot back at 10-under-par.
“To me it really shows to myself that I can do it. I haven’t won a tournament in a really long time and you lose that confidence in yourself but its definitely back,” said Cary after the victory. Reflecting on the week and what helped him stay composed under pressure, Cary credited the camaraderie among the competitors. “All my playing partners were really nice. I have known a lot of them for a while and just talking with them in between shots and in between holes just kept me in the moment.”
In the Girls Division, Scout Fitzgerald captured her second Colorado PGA Junior Major Championship title after mounting a final-round charge with an impressive 5-under-par 67 to secure the victory. Fitzgerald, who also won this championship in 2024, showcased poise and determination throughout the final round to overtake the lead and earn another Major Championship.
“I’m really proud that I got the win. It was very difficult and Addie is a great player,” Fitzgerald reflected following her victory. Fitzgerald also credited her coach Murphy Creek Assistant Golf Professional Jeff Carter, PGA, as someone who played an important role in helping her achieve the championship win.
