July 10th - Windsor, CO - Colorado PGA Junior Golf (COPGAJR) held its second Major Championship of the summer on Monday through Wednesday, July 8th - July 10th at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor, Colorado. As players arrived to the course they were greeted with a Mizuno t-shirt, a Mizuno bucket hat, a StrackaLine yardage book, and a putting cup that doubled as a keychain. The competitors were vying for a spot into the 48th Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championship to be held at Congressional Country Club later this month.
Coming into the tournament, there were a total of 60 boys and 30 girls, of which, 32 boys survived the cut going into the final day and 15 girls. For the boys, Talan Gover started off quite strong, stringing together 5 birdies in a row, with a total of 9 birdies through the day, which led to an impressive 35-29, a total of 64 for the day. Logan Hale shot 2-under for an even 70 for the girls, leading the field by 2, with Sofia Lee and Ashleigh Wilson right on her heels for second at even.
For round 2, Andre Dumonteil and Conner Scheich had the low of the day for the boys with a 68 (-3), which put Conner Scheich tied for first with Talan Gover at a two day total of -7. Ashleigh Wilson showcased her consistency for the girls, shooting an even par, 72, for a two-day total of 144, offsetting Logan Hale by 3 shots.
Landon Houska came to play for the final day, shooting his career low with a 64 (-7) with a three-day total of 201 (-12). Talan Gover and Miles Kuhl rounded out the top three with a 203 (-10) and 204 (-9) respectively. When asked what his favorite moment from the tournament was, Landon said that it would be when he “made a 70-footer on 13,” saying that it “really just shifted the momentum and got everything going in the right direction.” He later said that his key to success was both ball striking and having the putts drop on the final day. As he said, “My ball striking was good all week, and just had to get some putts to drop. And they finally did. So I was just confident going into today and knew that it was out there.”
Logan Hale hung in there, going 70-77-70 for a final three-day score of 217 (+1), upsetting the reigning champion Ashleigh Wilson who was in first place coming into day three by 3 strokes. Logan said her key to success was “staying in the moment…, having fun with it,” and not trying to “take things too serious.” Her key to success played a big role in how she mentally prepared coming into the final round, saying, “I tried to accept all outcomes and put myself in a place that I was ok with whatever the course brought at me, whatever my competitors brought at me, and just kind of tried to stay in the moment and have fun with the group I was playing with.”
Our two Champions and their runner-ups, Talan Glover and Sophia Lee, qualify to compete at the National Junior PGA Championship at Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Maryland, from July 30 to August 2, 2024.
